(AFX UK Focus) 2007-11-18 12:08 GMT: G20 urges more currency flexibility in countries with current account surpluses

KLEINMOND, South Africa (Thomson Financial) - The G20 group of leading industrial and emerging economies urged more flexibility in the currencies of countries with large current account surpluses

In their communique following this weekend's meeting here the G20 agreed that an orderly unwinding of global imbalances is a "shared responsibility", involving among, other things, "greater exchange rate flexibility in a number of surplus countries".

China, which is crucially part of the G20, was not mentioned by name, but its currency policy has been the biggest source of tension in currency markets at a time when the value of the US dollar has fallen heavily.

While the Chinese yuan has barely budged, other currencies like the euro, the Canadian dollar and the commodity currencies have all surged on foreign exchange markets in recent weeks and months.

Brokerage, bank accounts deemed safe

E-Trade customers had some needless hand-wringing this past week, worrying about the brokerage's financial problems and whether they might jeopardize the safety of 3.7 million accounts.

The New York-based online broker told account holders their money was safe due to government protections and additional insurance. E-Trade Financial Corp. even took out a full-page advertisement in The Wall Street Journal to assuage broader fears of a collapse after its stock plunged due to the credit market turmoil.

E-Trade, like other financial institutions dealing with credit problems, faces defections as customers pull accounts without realizing that their assets are protected. Some investors have even opened accounts at other brokerage firms to spread their money around.

"Until the smoke clears, we reduced our holdings tremendously," said Steve Kaloroplos, a retired small business owner from South Carolina.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A former employee of the Putnam County Sheriff's Department has agreed to plead guilty to stealing $45,000 in government grants to the department, federal prosecutors said.

Alexander has signed a statement indicating that he intended to plead guilty to two counts of federal program fraud, prosecutors said Wednesday. He faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a fine of $250,000 on each count.

Alexander remains in federal custody pending a court hearing, which has not yet been scheduled, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Indianapolis.

Alexander diverted $45,000 from two grants to the sheriff's department in December 2005 and September 2006 to his personal checking account, prosecutors said.
