Major rise in foreclosures boosts banks' home sales

More than 8% of the homes for sale in the Charlotte area are being sold by a bank that acquired them in foreclosure.

That represents a steep rise in the number of bank-owned homes here amid the subprime mortgage fallout.

Of the 27,558 listings of homes available in the Charlotte area as of Oct. 30, 2,254 were bank-owned foreclosures, according to RealtyTrac, an Irvine, Calif.-based national foreclosure research company.

That's a 16% increase from the previous quarter, a 31% rise over third quarter 2006 and a whopping 363% increase since the first quarter of 2005.

The Elm City ID card was established in May in part to facilitate the process by which undocumented immigrants can open bank accounts. But interviews with local banks indicate it may not have had its intended effect.

Amid confusion over federal policy toward cards such as New Haven's, banks in the Elm City have declined to accept it as sufficient primary identification — and even in some cases a secondary identification — when residents apply for accounts, an investigation by the News has shown.

Meanwhile, general ignorance of banks' varied policies prevents many undocumented residents from opening accounts.

Despite these limitations, they are still able to open accounts at some New Haven banks by presenting consular identification cards, which do not require proof of legal status in the United States.

Big ticket: You'll spend more thinking about your bank account than about your wallet

It has long been assumed that consumers are good judges of affordability, but a new study reveals that how much youre willing to spend is influenced by whether you think about a larger pool of resources (such as your bank account) or a smaller pool (the cash in your wallet). Through a series of four experiments, researchers found that this resource assessment also applies to food and time. Counting calories" Youre more likely to eat that slice of cake if you think about how many calories you have allotted for the week, rather than just for the day.

Whether a person can afford a particular unit of consumption depends not just on the price of consumption, but whether one can afford the purchase as well, explain Carey K. Morewedge (Carnegie Mellon University), Leif Holtzman (Digitas, Boston), and Nicholas Epley (University of Chicago).
