A HIGH-POWERED coalition of politicians, writers and lawyers last night joined forces to warn that the courts' treatment of human rights lawyer Aamer Anwar represented an "attack on freedom of speech". Iain Banks, the author, joined veteran Labour politician Tony Benn, Respect MP George Galloway, Bashir Mann, convener of the Muslim Council of Scotland and human rights lawyer Gareth Pierce, among others, to appeal to the courts to stop pursuing Mr Anwar. .

Jerusalem (CNSNews.com) - The Israeli government voted to release some 441 Palestinian security prisoners, mostly from Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah faction, as a goodwill gesture before an anticipated meeting in Annapolis. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert also pledged to stop building new settlements in the West Bank.Olmert met with Abbas in Jerusalem on Monday. They discussed "various aspects" of the joint statement they plan to make at the U.S.-sponsored conference in Annapolis, Maryland, Olmert's spokeswoman Miri Eisin said in a statement.The conference is expected to take place next week although a firm date has not been announced.Earlier press reports suggested there would be no joint statement and that the two sides might make separate statements. However, Eisen said that negotiating teams from the two sides would meet again later to discuss a statement.

POST Bank could lose the deal to be a lead agent for the distribution of the Prosperity for All funds as the government seeks a "multi-pronged approach" to deliver the financial services to households. According to the multi-pronged approach adopted by the government, the country has been mapped into 15 financial zones that will be served by one locally based and regionally owned institution. .
Cofunds' fee-based services rolled out into new year
Cofunds is piloting its new suite of services for fee-based advisers and will roll out the service over the next few months. The programme includes setting up its cash account, which will link to the client's bank or building society account. Cash will be deposited electronically or manually via cheque into the account and from it settlement will be made for investments into any fund or tax-wrapper and put an amount aside for fees agreed with the client and the adviser. The cash account will also be used to collect all payments of income or realisations of capital which the client has requested, including dividends, income drawdown from Sipps auto-withdrawals from Isas or bonds and encashments of funds. These services will be available to al clients whether their adviser is commission or fees-based.
