Indonesia seeks 59 mln dlrs from Tommy Soeharto

Indonesian state prosecutors said Monday they were seeking 59 million dollars from the son of former dictator Soeharto in stolen assets, damages and interest in a civil suit related to a land scam. The case being brought by the government against Hutomo Mandala Putra Soeharto, known as Tommy, is seen as part of revived efforts to bring the Suharto clan to account, though analysts have expressed scepticism at the likelihood of its success. Tommy is accused of overseeing a land swap when he was president of company Goro Batara Sakti (GBS), with the national logistics agency Bulog, in the 1990s. Bulog received a worthless swamp in return for a prime piece of commercial land that GBS built a hyperstore on. "The plaintiff suffered material losses of 244.2 billion rupiah (26 million dollars) and immaterial damages of 100 milliard rupiah," said state prosecutor Yoseph Suardi Sabda, reading an indictment at the trial, which opened after mediation between the two sides failed.

Loonie loses ground following comments by Bank of Canada chief

OTTAWA - The Canadian dollar lost some ground Monday morning after Bank of Canada governor David Dodge raised the possibility that the central bank may cut interest rates to boost the economy.

The currency declined 0.70 of a cent to 101.99 cents US, down from Friday's close of 102.69. The dollar has been declining since it hit a record high of just over 110 cents US earlier this month.

Dodge, in South Africa during the weekend for a meeting of the Bank for International Settlements, said there is less optimism than there was a month ago "that the financial market problems would resolve themselves."

Kim Hye-soo is Eleventh Mom

A woman with bad health and a broken bank account lived just to pity herself, until she met a young boy who had it worse than she did.

The woman is the 11th mother for the boy, whose stepmothers had come and gone after the death of his real mother. Eleventh Mom, to be released on November 29, is a film about the bonding between a stepmother and stepson, each of whom insists they are more pathetic. The mother is played by actress Kim Hye-soo.

During the filming of The War of Flower, Kim accidentally came across a script that was originally meant for another actress. Kim Jin-seong, director of the movie Eleventh Mom, was brainstorming for a low-budget film under 500 million won at that time, but didnt have a specific production plan. Kim then politely suggested herself as the female lead even while thinking, Production wont be easy.

Susquehanna, Community bank workers to lose jobs

Six branches of Susquehanna and CommunityBanks will close over the weekend and more than 80 people - most of whom work in Hanover - will lose their jobs.

The moves result from Susquehanna's purchase of CommunityBanks earlier this year.

Branches of both banks will begin operating Monday under the Susquehanna name.

Two Community Bank branches in the Hanover-Adams area - including one on Wetzel Drive in Conewago Township - will close.

But no other bank branches in the Hanover-Adams area will close, they will just operate under the Susquehanna name, said Steve Trapnell, spokesman for Susquehanna Bancshares.

Four jobs are being lost due to this weekend's branch consolidation; the rest are being lost at a CommunityBanks' operations center in Hanover.

"Those are the kinds of operations that tend to see consolidation more," said Trapnell.

Manuel: Economy shows signs of strain

Finance Minister Trevor Manuel said at the launch of the latest Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS) on Tuesday that while the past four years have been good for the South African economy, it has begun to show signs of strain. He noted that these signs of strain are reflected in rising inflation and a high current-account deficit.Manuel emphasised that to progress towards sustainable growth above 6%, a series of micro-economic reforms is required to raise productivity, lower the costs of doing business, cut red tape, invest more in skills and increase the labour-absorptive capacity of the economy."We also have to increase spending on social and economic infrastructure to remove constraints to growth and share the gains of this expansion more widely," he said.He concluded that the budget framework makes a contribution to higher growth and poverty reduction through investment in infrastructure, human development and community services."To ensure that both the public finances and economic growth are sustainable for present and future generations, the framework also signals more moderate growth in government expenditure over the medium term." He said the government is proposing to budget for a surplus of about 0,6% of GDP for the next three years.
