Carer facing jail for theft from patient
A CARER who fleeced a mentally disabled pensioner of thousands of pounds was yesterday told to prepare herself for jail. A jury at Newcastle Crown Court found Caroline Irvine, 47, guilty of exploiting her trusted position and plundering Edith Hall's bank account of up to £3,650. The mother-of-two, of Grange View in Widdrington, Northumberland, had denied theft and shook her head as the verdict was read out. She was released on bail and is due to return to court for sentencing on December 6, but told by Judge Michael Cartlidge to "prepare yourself for a prison sentence". The judge said: "This was a totally shameful fleecing of an elderly lady who could not tell the difference between a £5 note and a £10 note. "At one stage she took £1,400 in nine days.
Jewish Peace News: Gaza's jeopardized natural resource
2007-11-08 | As Israel chronically under-supplies power to the Gaza Strip (see article by Amira Hass posted earlier on JPN), it is also blocking development of another major energy source. A rich untapped off-shore gas field could, according to Tim Butcher of the Telegraph, ensure Gaza a sustainable, independent economy. Reporting on what he views as Israeli stall tactics in dealing with British Gas, Butcher depicts the multinational as a neutral agent poised to develop the gas fields to the benefit Gazans. His account obscures a world-wide history of similar development projects as, first and foremost, benefiting multinational corporations, not the local population. The people of Gaza may stand to lose their title to this natural resource even if Israel does allow its development. However, as it seems to me, Israel's actual stand on a deal regarding Gaza's gas field remains stubbornly obscure.
Beth Quinn: To the Nigerian prince and my other e-mail pals
Given that this is Thanksgiving week, I'd like to give thanks to the thousands of e-mailers I've heard from this year who sent me the most extraordinary offers, requests and warnings that someone might steal my kidneys if I fall asleep in Central Park. First, my thanks to those who e-mailed to give me something, especially the deposed Nigerian prince who selected me (because he trusts me!) to safeguard his money. If I just supply him with my bank account number, he'll deposit it right away, and I can keep a million of it as his way of saying thanks. I'd also like to thank the Free Lotto Sweepstakes of the United Kingdom for informing me that I've won five hundred thousand pounds sterling. I'm to contact Mr. Martin Purvis and tell him my ticket number (707PWYZ7007), but I'm to keep the whole thing confidential to "avoid people applying for your winning fund." I tell only you, dear reader, because I trust you.

Erap’s joint assets included
THE antigraft court may go after the assets of Joseph Estradas mistresses and children if they are under the former Presidents name, an official said Sunday. The Sandiganbayan has filed a writ of execution against Estrada, saying his pardon for plunder does not cover his civil liabilities. So long as the account is under the name of Joseph Estrada, such asset is covered by the forfeiture order of Sandiganbayan, Clerk of Court Renato Bocar told The Manila Times on Sunday. He said the forfeiture is not limited to the bank accounts of Estrada that were mentioned during his plunder trial but to all the accounts registered under his name, whether with his wife, or children or other persons. If it is a joint account with Joseph Estrada and it appears that he is the absolute owner, even if it is in a joint account, it is covered by the decision of the Sandiganbayan Special Division once he fails to pay the amount involved in the ruling, Bocar explained.
