Steve Forbes versus Alan Greenspan, Round One - community blog from Chris Skinner
So yesterday we had Alan Greenspan in the morning at the BAI Retail Delivery Show. As we walked into the conference theatre, there were big signs everywhere saying: "no media". Apparently Dr. Greenspan’s people had been very strict about this and so anyone with a media badge, which were bright green this year, were barred. L’il ol me is not media you see. I just happen to be a blogger. That’s social media, not mainstream media, so that’s ok. So I speed typed and caught the whole speech on my Sony Vaio. This is an example of old school PR where the company think they can control the message, as in you can ban media access to private meetings. Unfortunately, in the new world, everyone is media. Anyone can publish what transpires in an email, on a blog, in a podcast, through a chatroom. So the fact is you can’t control or hide anything, as I blogged about the other week.
Government to claw back unspent school funds
Teachers' leaders today appeared divided over government plans to redistribute the £85m of unspent money left in state schools' coffers. The government plans to make 20,000 primary, secondary and special schools give back to local authorities any money left over at the end of the year. This would mean schools would lose 5% of their outstanding balances, some of which schools save for work on new buildings or playground improvements. Ministers insist the move to claw back millions left unspent in school bank accounts every year would allow other pupils to benefit from the money immediately. .
Mike Newell’s allegations hit home after Luton caught in the ‘bungs’ sweep
It was in January last year that Mike Newell, then the manager of Luton Town, claimed that he had been offered bungs to facilitate transfers and alleged that "millions of pounds" had gone out of the game and into the pockets of agents. The ripples spread far and wide, prompting inquiries by the football authorities, undercover TV teams and the police. Yesterday they arrived back in Luton in the form of 55 FA charges against eight agents, four past and present directors and the Coca-Cola League One club itself. It remains to be seen whether Kenilworth Road and all who play in her will be swamped as a result. The club are charged with making undisclosed payments to agents through a separate company and providing misleading information to the FA. The two directors who are still involved in football face fines for failing to report rule breaches, while the other two, including Bill Tomlins, the former chairman, can expect sanctions to be waiting for them if they attempt to get back into the game.
Bank robbery suspects jailed
By Kathie O. Warco, Staff writer kwarco@observer-reporter.com A teller at Northwest Savings Bank driving past the Fredericktown bank just after it had been robbed Thursday afternoon was able to give state police information that helped them quickly nab two suspects. Daniel J. Famularo, 50, and Robert E. Loar, 58, both of 172 Fourth St., Pitt Gas, Greene County, were arrested about an hour-and-a-half after the 1 p.m. heist at the bank on Front Street. Loar is accused of pointing a gun at one of the tellers while Famularo pointed a weapon at the other employee. Famularo threw a bag on the counter and ordered the teller to "put money in the bag," state police said. Famularo's face was familiar to the bank's tellers, said Trooper David Vanderaar, who filed the charges.
Shareholders to fight Rock ‘fire sale’
THE two biggest shareholders in Northern Rock are calling for the auction of the stricken bank to be abandoned. RAB Capital and SRM Global, two hedge funds that account for 13% of the bank’s equity, said this weekend the company should not be sold or broken up. The explosive demand could derail a sale process that had attracted up to eight first-round offers when bids closed on Friday. Among them is a consortium led by Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Group. The company has assembled a funding syndicate led by Royal Bank of Scotland to repay immediately £10 billion of Northern Rock’s government borrowings. According to bankers, the RBS team includes Citi, and there is an intention to provide a £20 billion loan. But shareholders say the sale should be abandoned.
