Rangers outclassed as slick Barça turn on style

RANGERS may have confounded even their own expectations in the Champions League this season but they were unable to prevent their unbeaten record in the tournament coming to a predictable end last night at the home of the favourites to lift the trophy.

Thierry Henry's early goal provided Barcelona with the platform for a thoroughly deserved victory which was sealed by a wonderfully conceived second scored by the excellent Lionel Messi just before half-time.

Uproar over homeless shelter heats up

Business owners in the vicinity of a proposed homeless shelter on South Milton Avenue south of the railroad tracks support such a facility in Flagstaff. They're less supportive, however, of locating it in their neigbhorhood.About 40 people crowded into a small meeting room Monday night to hear Wendy White of Flagstaff Shelter Services give an overview of the shelter, which could be located in part of the old Home Alternatives building on West Phoenix Avenue. Many in the room were clearly agitated, still upset that neither White nor the city contacted them about the proposal before reading about it in the Arizona Daily Sun.Laura Enciso, owner of Mountain Sky Jazzercise Fitness Center, said she felt the city was colluding with the nonprofit to establish the shelter without notifying the neighbors."The downtown area is the jewel of the city," said Enciso.

(AFX UK Focus) 2007-11-19 12:34 GMT: G10's Trichet sticks to cautiously optimistic tone on global growth UPDATE

(adds comment Chinese central bank governor backing strong dollar policy)

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (Thomson Financial) - Chairman of the G10 group of central bankers Jean-Claude Claude Trichet today stuck to an optimistic tone on the prospects for global growth even though he conceded that the risks remain skewed to the downside.

"We can say that global growth looks like it is going at a pace that remains encouraging," he told reporters.

However, he qualified the statement by saying that "the risks on overall growth remain to the downside".

He identified sharp rises in the price of oil and food as one key risk to price stability around the world.

"We all have to continue to solidly anchor inflation expectations," he added.

At the same time, central banks around the world have to manage their economies so that higher oil and food prices do not lead to spiralling wages and incomes -- the dreaded second round inflationary effects, he said.

Proof settles paperwork problems

At Your Service: On Sept. 7, GMAC sent me loan-modification papers to return by Sept. 14. According to the FedEx shipping label printed by GMAC, that action was performed on Sept. 7. I received the package Sept. 10.

The same day, I notarized and signed the paperwork. I sent the papers back on Sept. 12, along with my payment of $709.01. As of Oct. 5, the check still had not been cashed. However, I have proof GMAC received these items at 9:09 a.m. Sept. 14.

I checked with my bank on Sept. 24 to see whether my payment had cleared, but was told it had not been presented for payment. I called GMAC several times and was told it never received the package. When I said the package was signed for in a Waterloo, Iowa, office, I was advised nothing could be done.

New Money-rates.com Reports that Online Banks Continue to Offer the Best Deals

Money-rates.com is reporting that the rate decreases of interest rates by the Federal Reserve has not diminished the attractive deals on online checking accounts that online banks are offering.

(PRWEB) November 12, 2007 - Money-rates.com is reporting that the rate decreases of interest rates by the Federal Reserve has not diminished the attractive deals on online checking accounts that online banks are offering. A recent survey by the site indicated that the nations 100 largest banks were offering a rate on their basic checking account almost four points below that of the online bank checking rates posted by money-rates.com.

According to web site editor, Clark Schultz, The amazing part of online banks is that not only are online banks offering higher rates and lower fees than brick-and-mortar banks, but 2007 has seen large growth in the rewards programs offered by online banks which are largely unavailable at your local bank.

Man accidentally killed by friend on camping trip

Two longtime friends from Panama City Beach, on a weekend camping trip to Gulf County, accidentally set off a pistol Saturday, killing one and wounding the other. Jayson Decker, 31, died at the campsite. James Cook was treated and released from a local hospital. Gulf County Sheriff Joe Nugent said the men had set up camp on the bank of the White City Canal earlier in the day. At about sundown, Decker picked up a loaded 9 mm pistol and tossed it to Cook. Cook caught it, and the gun fired. A single bullet passed through his left hand and struck Decker in the head, killing him. Cook ran to a nearby boat ramp to call for help, Nugent said. Deputies called a crime scene unit from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to examine the scene. The evidence matches Cook’s account of the shooting, Nugent said.

The best little deal in banking

If you belonged to a credit union in the past, it was probably because a volunteer at work or church approached you to let you know about the good deal you could get on a car loan.

Credit unions still offer car loans, they're still tied to affiliation groups, and they still have friendly members looking to let you know about a good deal. But today these not-for-profits are in a pitched battle with big retail banks for all your banking business.
